There is something special about looking at an old photograph. You can see a moment in time, but you don’t always know what that moment will mean 30 years later.
In 1996, a local newspaper captured one such moment at the Alliston Chiropractic Wellness Centre. In the photograph, Dr. Gordon Burgess is handing over the keys to the practice to a young Dr. Kent Newton. The caption reads:
“After 36 years in town Burgess has decided to take a well deserved retirement.”
At the time, it was simply a change of hands.
Today, it is part of our history.
And Now, 30 years Later, We’re Celebrating Dr. Kent.
When Dr. Kent began his journey at this practice in 1996, he couldn’t have known exactly what the next three decades would bring. Alliston has changed considerably since then. The community has grown. New neighbourhoods have appeared. Businesses have changed. Technology has transformed the way we work and communicate. Chiropractic care has evolved, too. On a more personal note, Dr. Kent navigated the full spectrum of the human experience—from getting married, building a family and marking major milestones to weathering inevitable losses and milestone celebrations. Of course, life also featured a few unplanned detours, including a bout of knee surgery and an unfortunate encounter with a snowboard. Through shifting seasons, evolving priorities, and a masterclass in newborn night-feeds and broken bones, life proved to be the ultimate teacher, yielding plenty of hard-earned wisdom along the way.
But some things don’t change. People still want to be heard. They want to feel better. They want to stay active and do the things they enjoy. And they want to know that the person caring for them knows their name and understands their story. Over the past 30 years, Dr. Kent has had the privilege of caring for generations of people in Alliston and the surrounding communities.
Some patients have been with him since the beginning. Others came along somewhere in the middle. Some arrived because a friend or family member recommended the practice. And some patients who first came through the doors as children have eventually brought their own children.
These are many of the wonderful things about practicing in a community like Alliston. You get to watch people grow.
More Than a Career
Thirty years in one community is about much more than a career milestone.
It’s about relationships.
It’s about the conversations that happen in the treatment room.
It’s about recognizing a familiar face when someone walks through the door.
It’s about hearing how someone’s children are doing, remembering a patient’s upcoming trip or celebrating when someone reaches a goal they’ve been working toward.
Those little moments add up.
And after 30 years, there are a lot of them.
From 1996 to 2026
That newspaper photograph is now a wonderful reminder of just how much can happen in 30 years. A young chiropractor receiving the keys. A practice with an established history in Alliston. And a community that would become an important part of Dr. Kent’s life and career.
The practice itself dates back to 1960, meaning the Alliston Chiropractic Wellness Centre has now been part of the community for 66 years. But this anniversary belongs particularly to Dr. Kent.
Thirty years.
Thirty years of showing up.
Thirty years of learning and evolving.
Thirty years of caring for people.
Thirty years of being part of Alliston.
